The first Báo [薄] range, from Mount Gǒulín [苟林] to Mount Yángxū [陽虛], comprises sixteen mountains and extends 2,982 li. Mount Shēng [升] is a chief mountain: its rites require the full animal sacrifice, with fine jade hung as an offering. Mount Shǒu [首] is divine: its rite uses rice, black sacrificial animals, the full three-animal offering, and malt-brewed wine; shields are danced with, drums are set out, and a jade disk is hung as an offering. The Shī [尸] River joins with heaven. Fat animals are offered to it: a black dog above, a hen below, and a female goat whose blood is let and presented. Fine jade is hung, coloured, and offered for enjoyment. From the English edition of Mountains & Seas. Open the reader for the Chinese editions and translator’s notes.
