A further 200 li north stands Mount Fājiū [發鳩], with many silkworm-thorn trees above. There is a bird like a crow, with a patterned head, white beak, and red feet, called Jīng Wèi [精衛]. It cries its own name. She was the youngest daughter of Yándì [炎帝], named Nǚwá [女娃]. Nǚwá [女娃] swam in the Dōng [東] Sea, drowned, and did not return; thus she became Jīng Wèi [精衛]. She is always carrying wood and stones from the western mountains to fill the Dōng [東] Sea. The Zhāng [漳] River rises here and flows east into the Hé [河].From the English edition of Mountains & Seas.
