The third western range begins at Mount Chóngwú [崇吾], south of the Hé [河] River. To the north one sees Zhǒngsuì [冢遂]; south, Yóu [䍃] Marsh; west, the High God's hill for wrestling with beasts; east, Yán [䗡] Pool. There grows a tree with round leaves and white calyxes, red blossoms and black grain. Its fruit resembles trifoliate orange; eating it benefits one's descendants. There is a beast like a yù [禺], with patterned arms, described with Bào and Hǔ features, and skilled at throwing. Its name is Jǔ Fù [舉父]. There is a bird like a duck, with one wing and one eye; only when paired can it fly. Its name is Mán Mán [蠻蠻]; when it appears, great floods fall upon all beneath heaven. From the English edition of Mountains & Seas. Open the reader for the Chinese editions and translator’s notes.
